Write Lyrics That Actually Work

Suno can write its own lyrics โ€” but when you provide your own, the song becomes genuinely personal. This lesson teaches you how to write lyrics that Suno will turn into something special.

Why write your own lyrics?

Suno will generate lyrics automatically if you do not provide any. Those lyrics are fine โ€” but they are generic. They could be for anyone.

When you write the lyrics yourself โ€” even just a verse and a chorus โ€” the song becomes genuinely personal. It mentions the person's name. It references something specific about them. That is what people are paying ยฃ10 for. That is the product.

You do not need to be a poet. You do not need to be musical. You just need to follow a simple structure and include the right details.

๐Ÿ“
The structure of a simple song

Most pop songs follow the same basic structure. You only need to write three sections:

Verse (tells the story)
This is where you put the personal details โ€” the person's name, their interests, a specific memory. Aim for 4 lines. It does not need to rhyme perfectly โ€” just tell the story.
Chorus (the memorable bit)
This is the part that repeats and sticks in your head. Keep it simple โ€” 2 to 4 lines. Include the person's name. Make it feel celebratory or emotional, depending on the style.
Bridge (optional โ€” adds variety)
A short section that breaks up the pattern โ€” often more emotional or reflective. You can skip this for shorter songs.

In Suno, you tell it the structure using labels like [Verse], [Chorus], and [Bridge] before each section.

A complete example

Here is a set of lyrics for a personalised birthday song for a girl called Emma who loves horses and is turning 15:

[Verse]
Emma, you light up every room you walk in
Fifteen years of laughter, kindness, and grace
Out in the fields with your horse every morning
There is no one else who could take your place
[Chorus]
Happy birthday Emma, today is your day
Fifteen candles burning, lighting up your way
Here is to the adventures still to come
Happy birthday Emma, you are second to none
[Verse]
The way you care for every living creature
The way you smile when you are in the saddle
You have got a heart as big as the horizon
And a spirit nothing in this world can rattle
[Chorus]
Happy birthday Emma, today is your day...
(repeat)

You do not need to write this well. This is a polished example. Your lyrics just need to be personal and genuine โ€” the music will carry them. Even simple, heartfelt lines work beautifully once Suno adds the melody.

Things to avoid
โœ—
Forcing rhymes that sound unnatural. "Emma loves her horse so much / she gives it a gentle touch" โ€” the rhyme works but it sounds awkward. Natural language beats forced rhymes every time.
โœ—
Lines that are too long. Suno struggles with very long lines. Keep each line to about 8โ€“12 syllables for best results.
โœ—
Too many specific names and places. One or two personal details per verse is enough. Overloading the lyrics makes them hard to sing.
โœ—
Inside jokes that only one person will understand. The song needs to feel warm and celebratory to anyone who hears it, not just the person it is for.
๐ŸŽฏ Quick check
What is the main advantage of writing your own lyrics rather than letting Suno generate them automatically?
It is faster than letting Suno do it
The song becomes genuinely personal โ€” mentioning the person's name and specific details about them
The song sounds more professional
It uses fewer credits
