The five ingredients of a great music prompt

When you describe a song to Suno, think of yourself as briefing a professional music producer. The more specific you are, the better the result. There are five things to include:

๐ŸŽธ
1. Genre
What style of music? Pop, folk, hip-hop, country, jazz, classical, rock, R&B, electronic. Be specific โ€” "upbeat pop" is better than just "pop".
๐Ÿ˜Š
2. Mood
How should it feel? Happy, emotional, nostalgic, celebratory, energetic, calm, funny, heartfelt. Mood shapes everything โ€” the tempo, the chord choices, the vocal style.
๐ŸŽน
3. Instruments
What should you hear? Acoustic guitar, piano, drums, strings, brass, synth. You can list several. "Acoustic guitar, light percussion, and a warm piano" paints a clear picture.
๐ŸŽค
4. Vocal style
Male or female vocals? Soft and gentle, powerful and belted, spoken word, choir? Or no vocals at all โ€” instrumental only?
๐Ÿ“–
5. Theme or subject
What is the song about? A birthday, a friendship, an adventure, a specific person's hobbies. This is where personalisation happens.

Before and after: the difference a good prompt makes
โŒ Weak prompt
"A happy birthday song for my friend"
Result: generic, could be for anyone, forgettable
โœ… Strong prompt
"An upbeat, heartfelt pop song celebrating a 16th birthday. Female vocals, acoustic guitar and light drums. Warm and celebratory mood. About a girl who loves football and baking."
Result: personal, specific, something the recipient will love

The strong prompt uses all five ingredients. The weak prompt uses none of them. The difference in output quality is enormous.
