Lesson 4: How to Explain It to Your Supporters

Getting someone to sign up is great. Getting them to actually use it every time they shop is the goal. This lesson gives you the exact words to make that happen.

The problem with just sending a link

Here is something that catches a lot of people out. They share their easyfundraising link, their supporters click it and sign up โ€” and then nothing happens. The donations never come through.

Why? Because signing up is only the first step. Your supporters also need to understand how to actually shop through easyfundraising every time they buy something online. If they do not understand the process, they will sign up once and then go back to shopping the same way they always have.

Your job is to explain it clearly enough that it becomes a habit. The good news is that once someone understands it, it is very simple โ€” and most people are genuinely happy to do it.

๐Ÿ›’
The Tesco walkthrough โ€” explain it like this

The clearest way to explain easyfundraising is to walk someone through a specific example. Use Tesco โ€” almost everyone knows it, and it is one of the most popular retailers on the platform.

1
Instead of going to Tesco.com directly...
Your supporter opens the easyfundraising website or app first. This is the only habit change they need to make โ€” start at easyfundraising, not at the retailer.
2
They search for Tesco in the easyfundraising search bar
They will see the Tesco logo appear, along with the cashback rate โ€” something like "0.5% donation". This tells them exactly how much their shopping will raise.
3
They click on the Tesco logo
This takes them from easyfundraising directly to the Tesco website. They are now on the exact same Tesco website they would normally use โ€” nothing looks different.
4
They shop and check out exactly as normal
They add their items, go to checkout, pay โ€” everything is identical to shopping directly on Tesco. The prices are the same. The process is the same.
5
A donation is added to your fundraising pot
A few days after the purchase, easyfundraising adds the donation to your cause. Your supporter does not see it leave their account โ€” because it never did. It comes from Tesco's marketing budget.

A script you can use in person or on the phone

Sometimes the best way to get someone on board is to explain it to them directly โ€” in person, on the phone, or in a voice note. Here is a script you can use or adapt:

Your script
"So basically, instead of going straight to Tesco or Amazon when you want to shop online, you go to easyfundraising first. You search for the shop you want, click on it, and it takes you straight to their website. You shop exactly as normal โ€” same prices, same checkout โ€” but because you went through easyfundraising, they give a small percentage back to my trip fund. It's completely free for you. The only change is that you start at easyfundraising instead of going directly to the shop. That's it. Would you be happy to do that?"
๐Ÿ’ก
The easyfundraising app makes it even easier. Encourage your supporters to download the free easyfundraising app on their phone. It sends them a reminder whenever they visit a retailer's website โ€” so they never forget to activate their donation.
๐Ÿ”
How to keep supporters using it

The biggest challenge is not getting people to sign up โ€” it is keeping them engaged. Here are a few simple things that make a real difference:

1
Send a thank-you message when someone signs up. A quick "Thank you so much for signing up โ€” it really means a lot!" goes a long way.
2
Give them a monthly update. "My easyfundraising total is now ยฃ47 โ€” thank you all so much!" keeps people motivated and reminds them to keep using it.
3
Remind them at key shopping moments. Before Christmas, Black Friday, or the summer holiday booking season โ€” send a quick reminder that easyfundraising works for all of these.
โœ… Your task โ€” explain it to someone today
1
Choose one adult in your life โ€” a parent, grandparent, or family friend
2
Explain easyfundraising to them using the Tesco walkthrough above
3
Help them download the easyfundraising app on their phone if they are happy to
4
Watch them do their first shop through easyfundraising together if possible
That is the most important conversation you will have in your fundraising. In the next lesson, you will discover the three types of shopping that earn the most money โ€” and why focusing on these with your supporters can transform your total.
๐Ÿ‘€
What's coming in Lesson 5

Not all shopping earns the same amount. In Lesson 5, you will learn about the Big Three earning opportunities โ€” the three types of purchases that can earn each supporter ยฃ75โ€“ยฃ100 per year โ€” and how to make sure your supporters know about them.
