What is it?

A Virtual Quiz Night is an online fundraising event hosted via Zoom, Google Meet, or a similar platform, where participants pay an entry fee to compete in a general knowledge quiz from the comfort of their own homes. It is one of the easiest and cheapest fundraising events to organise because there are no venue costs, no catering costs, and no travel required. It is also incredibly inclusive — friends and family from anywhere in the UK (or even abroad) can participate.

What you need

  • A free Zoom or Google Meet account (Zoom free tier allows 40-minute meetings; upgrade to a paid plan for longer events)
  • A quiz of 50–60 questions across 5–6 rounds (write your own or use a free quiz template online)
  • A payment method for entry fees — use PayPal, bank transfer, or a JustGiving fundraising page
  • A scoring spreadsheet to track team scores in real time
  • Optional: a raffle with prizes that can be delivered by post or collected locally

Step-by-step plan

1
Write or source your quiz. Aim for 5–6 rounds of 10 questions each, covering a mix of topics: general knowledge, sport, music, film, and a picture round.
2
Set up a payment method. Ask participants to pay their entry fee via PayPal or bank transfer before the event.
3
Promote the event 2–3 weeks in advance. Share the Zoom link and payment details with participants.
4
On the day, log in 15 minutes early to test your audio and screen sharing. Have your quiz questions and scoring spreadsheet ready.
5
Welcome participants, explain the rules, and start the quiz. Read each question clearly and give 30 seconds for answers.
6
After each round, ask teams to share their answers and award points. Keep a running leaderboard.
7
Announce the winner at the end and arrange delivery of any prizes. Share the total raised on social media.

How to advertise it

  • Share the event link on social media and in family WhatsApp groups
  • Post in local community Facebook groups
  • Ask friends and family to share the event with their own networks
  • Offer a prize for the winning team to create competitive buzz
  • Set up a JustGiving page so that people who can't attend can still donate

Realistic earnings

With 10 teams of 4 paying £5 per person (£20 per team), you raise £200. Add a raffle and you can easily reach £200–£300 with minimal costs.

Top tips

✅ Include a picture round — it is always the most popular and generates the most discussion
✅ Have a tie-breaker question ready in case two teams finish level
✅ Use a free tool like Kahoot or Mentimeter for a more interactive experience
✅ Record the quiz and share highlights on social media afterwards to promote future events

Common mistakes to avoid

⚠️ Not testing your audio and screen sharing before the event — technical issues are the biggest risk for virtual events
⚠️ Making the quiz too easy or too hard — aim for a mix of difficulty levels
⚠️ Not having a clear payment method set up before the event
⚠️ Forgetting to mute participants during questions to avoid noise disruption
